A Change of Scene

If all life is a stage and all people but characters in a scene,
is it not possible to choose to play a different part
to that which we are currently playing?

Could the street busker not choose to become the businessman,
and the businessman, the teacher?

Could the teacher not choose to be the plumber,
and the plumber, the preacher?

Could the preacher not choose to be the beggar,
and the beggar become the king?

Could he who thinks that all men are selfish
not choose to believe in selfless love,
and she who believes in selfless love
not choose to believe in selfish nature?

Can we not swap our clothes, our lines of speech and our views,
and don a character in the play,
a character anew?

Or is there a singular version given by decree to the world,
of our turns of phrase, our positions on the stage,
and all the truths to which we hold?
