Nuggets of Presence

Hello Fellow Traveller,

Sometimes our minds are busy and our hearts do not feel free — but then through some seemingly random occurrence, we realign with the flow of the universe and are brought back to presence.

I’ve been feeling a bit stuck lately, and following a slightly compulsive schedule of activity, in a way that seems productive but in fact strangles life.

Then yesterday afternoon, a series of impossibly unlikely events saw me sitting in a Middle Eastern street food restaurant on the NSW North Coast next to a guy named Yvan.

Yvan called out to a guy at another table to say he felt he knew him from somewhere, but where?

Sydney?

Newcastle?

No, the other guy — from memory, his name was Sam — hadn’t lived in either of those places, and after a bit more back and forth, Yvan and Sam agreed they did not, in fact, know each other.

“What brings you here, though?” I interjected.

Well, it turns out Yvan’s helping run the camping festival I saw a poster for just the day before and was umming and ahing about going to.

My heart wanted to go, but my mind was questioning the path.

So while consciously I’d gone to this particular restaurant — after walking into another one and deciding against staying — to grab some dinner, in reality, I’d gone to meet Yvan, and Yvan had gone to meet me.

I bought a ticket to the festival on the spot.

It just happens that way sometimes, and it was good to be back in the flow.

It also led me to jot down these ‘nuggets of presence’, which I thought I’d share with you.

Nuggets of Presence

Rest gently in the now
and you will see
that the doors are already open.

***

I have thought a lot
about what to do,
But the universe is taking me there
regardless.

***

Imagine the infinitesimally
small probability
that you are there
and I am here.
Is that not miracle enough?

***

Was all the rest
just noise and chatter?
Or did we have to suffer all the distractions
in order to reconnect with the flow?

***

Listen to the song
of the universe
that is in your heart.

***

Until after the festival,

Jason

  1. Thanks Jason, reminds me of an interview I heard with an American poet, Jane Hirshfield, who spoke about the antidote for despondency being humility; letting go of the idea that we can control how things turn out.
It’s tricky because clearly we have agency to act in a particular way, make decisions, etc. Perhaps we need to be more open to the subtle forces, those beyond our everyday awareness, and learn to let go when we’re resisting the flow that you speak off.
